Dog Training Tools

Perhaps you are looking to teach your pet some cool tricks, or maybe you just need to immediately stop an unwanted behavior.. the easiest way to help reinforce your rules is through dog training tools.  Dog training tools can be doors, gates, leashes, crates and other physical tools that can be used to control your dog, and must be maintained to keep the situation under control.

A common dog training tool used are clickers.  Clickers are  a small device that makes a distinctive “click” sound when you push the button.  When training your pet to do something like sit, when you get your dog to sit you click and immediately give him or her a treat.  Eventually you can stop giving treats and just use the clicker and get the same results.  The “click” lets your pet know that they have done something good.  Clickers are discussed further in Dog Clicker Training.

Dog training tools could also be a specific collar.  If your dog is pulling when you take him/her for walks, there are a variety of different collars and harnesses that can assist you in easing the pull.  For me, a regular collar usually results in my dog gasping and choking himself.  A harness is great and cuts back on the pulling quite significantly however he still chases after blowing leaves, etc.  The only thing I have found that has 100% desired results is the Gentle Leader.  Since I started putting him on it for our walks, he no longer runs around, pulls hard, chases things, constantly sniff everything, eats twigs and trash.  Gentle Leaders are brilliant dog training tools!  They are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased in most stores.  The cheapest I have found was on Amazon.

For long-lasting behavior change you need to do some training, and the best way to teach your dog to stop doing one thing is to teach him/her to start another – something that’s incompatible with the action you don’t like.  Some examples of behavior changes can be found on Dog Training Basics.
